Fate Sends a Shadow

Some people believe in an ancient concept of fate, a powerful force, an uncontrollable and mysterious presence traveling through space and time. Fate can manipulate any or all events in your life with both positive and negative outcomes.  One has no control over this pervasive authority, forever at the mercy of its desires, but what happens when fate has something better to do and sends a shadow instead? Would you be able to distinguish this double from the real design? Would this doppelganger be malevolent or virtuous?

Fate Sends a Shadow was created within the span of a single year, during a time of deep personal loss, spanning family, career and community. The reoccurring themes of abandonment and longing are presented as a surrealistic journey through the universe, vast and unpredictable. As a perfect visual metaphor for fate, one must surrender to the cosmos while simultaneously attempting to navigate its inexplicable power. Each collage in this series addresses the struggles of questioning if the events of this past year have been at the mercy of fate, or if fate’s indistinguishable double has adopted its master’s mannerisms, an imitation intervening in my life, leading me down a false path?

Perhaps I am this shadow…
